Bliss balls: healthy energy snack

Having a sweet tooth? Bliss balls are a good choice for a guilt-free sweet treat, because they help sustain your energy levels and supply fibre, minerals and vitamins. Most bliss balls are dairy-free and gluten-free, and don't contain refined sugar.

These bite-size balls are easy to make and to take on the go. Pack them in the kids' school lunchbox. Take them to work or enjoy the energy balls after a workout to recover.

Bliss balls come in many variants. Mix and match healthy ingredients that you like, such as coconut, dried fruit, such as Medjool dates, chia, cacao nibs, nuts and seeds. Blend all ingredients until a mixture is tacky. Shape the dough into small balls and roll each ball into a garnish of your choice, e.g. shredded coconut, cacao or hemp hearts. Before serving, place in the refrigerator for about 10 minutes until firm. They can be stored in an air tight container in the fridge for a week or in the freezer for up to a month. They taste best when served slightly chilled or at room temperature.

These are our favorite recipes:

Fudgy choco energy balls

Our number 1, because we love chocolate! The recipe is from cookbook 'The Vegucated family table'. Ingredients are oat flour, Medjool dates, raw cacao powder, vanilla extract, maple syrup and a pinch of salt (if wanted). These energy balls supply amongst others magnesium, zinc, vitamin B6 and thiamine.

Omega3 balls

This nutritional snack is packed with Omega 3. Easy to make by blending Medjool dates, oatmeal, flaxseed, nuts, cacao powder and some soy milk. Roll the balls into shredded coconut. Because the nuts are finely chopped, these bliss balls are suitable for toddlers too. This recipe is from Lisa Steltenpool's cookbook and app Vegan Vibes. Download the app for free and find this and other delicious vegan recipes (all in Dutch).

Triple almond energy balls

To make sure you get your recommended daily intake of nuts, these bliss balls are the ones you want. As the name suggests, these balls contain whole almonds, roasted almond butter, and almond extract, giving them a rich, nutty flavor.
